His first sporting success came at the 1976 South African water-skiing championships where he finished 2nd and then continued to dominate the barefoot water-skiing scene in SA and Europe – establishing a world ramp jump record which he held for four years.

At this time, he started Powerboat racing, another sport he dominated in SA,

winning the SA Formula one championship 15 times, and finishing 3rd in the

World Championships in 1989,

despite being banned from the

last two events for political reasons.

His first major Formula one boat crash in Malaysia which left him in a coma and shortly thereafter, was thought to be the cause of a brain hemorrhage. Another accident in Saldanha Bay in 2002, leaving Peter trapped underwater for 2 minutes and 58 seconds, after successfully resuscitating him, he landed up in a coma for a second time.

In 2008, he was inducted into the South African Sports Hall of Fame and in total, he has been awarded National colours on 39 occasions and has won 23 National Championships across four different sports - the last few being in Motor Racing.
